Step 5 of 5

Sound that completes the picture, then delivery

In the last step I mix voice, music and atmosphere so they are clear and belong with the picture, choose music and sound with rights that match the agreed use, send it for review on a private YouTube link — and once approved, deliver the master files on Google Drive.

Goes on to the next step

It ends with master files on Google Drive, ready for wherever you agreed to use them.

What I do at this step

  1. Good sound starts on the shoot

I record with wireless lapel mics for up to four speakers at once, plus a separate recorder with a shotgun mic. At events, sound can come straight from the venue mixer.

  2. Clear speech

Evening out speech levels across the film, reducing noise, and keeping words above the music.

  3. Choosing music and sound effects

Music and sound effects with rights that match the agreed use — websites, social media, advertising or television — and that suit the tone we planned.

  4. Narration or a speaker

Whether to use narration, a real speaker or music only is agreed back in planning; at this step I set the sound to the rhythm of the picture.

  5. Review and delivery

Review on a private YouTube link; once approved, the master files are delivered on Google Drive, vertical, horizontal and at the resolution for each place it will be used.

What you prepare

  • Narration or a speaker — we agree which to use
  • An approved narration script, and the correct pronunciation of names
  • Where it will be used, so the music rights and file sizes are right

What comes out of it

  • Master files on Google Drive
  • Vertical and horizontal versions and lengths as agreed
  • Subtitles, if agreed

What to watch for

  • Music without the rights

Music without the proper rights can get a video muted or restricted on platforms. I choose music licensed for the agreed use from the start.

  • Changing where it is used later

If a video made for your website will later run as an ad or on television, tell me first so I can check the music rights cover it.

  • Viewers with the sound off

On social media some people watch with the sound off. If the key content is in what people say, add subtitles or on-screen text.

  • Keep your own copy of the master

Download the files from Google Drive and keep a copy of your own, so you can use them whenever you need.
